This dog is sometimes called the "chrysanthemum-faced dog" because the hair grows on the face in all directions. Contributing to the development of the dog was a cross between the Tibetan Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. Quickly this breed became a favorite of the Imperial Chinese court and for many years the Chinese refused to sell or trade the Shih Tzu to anyone in the West. This breed is a popular companion and show dog. The pictures below are a collection of some of our Shih Tzus as well as other Shih Tzu pictures we have seen on the internet. We hope these pictures will help you understand the size, color, hair and general look of the breed.
